Duochrome Eye Test Overview

The Duochrome Test is a vision assessment used in eye exams to refine and adjust glasses prescriptions. It helps determine the best spherical correction for clear vision. The test is based on the principle of chromatic aberration. This phenomenon occurs when different wavelengths of light are bent by the eye’s lens. The Duochrome Test evaluates how your eyes respond to these different light wavelengths.

How the Duochrome Test Works:

1. Principle of Chromatic Aberration:

• Chromatic Aberration: Different colors (wavelengths) of light are refracted (bent) by different amounts. Shorter wavelengths (e.g., blue-green) are bent more than longer wavelengths (e.g., red).
• Target Colors: The test uses red (approximately 620 nm) and green (approximately 535 nm) backgrounds. These colors are chosen because they are dioptrically equidistant from the yellow wavelength (570 nm), which is typically where the eye focuses best.

2. Test Setup:

• Projection: Black letters or symbols are projected onto a background split into red and green halves.
• Wavelengths and Refraction: The red wavelength, being longer, is refracted less than the green wavelength, which means the yellow (optimal focus) will be closer to the green side of the spectrum.

3. Testing Procedure:

• Final Sphere Adjustment: During the test, the goal is to adjust the spherical lens correction until the letters on both the red and green sides of the chart appear equally sharp.
• Accommodation Consideration: It is crucial to use the least minus power that the patient will accept to minimize the effects of accommodation (focusing effort), especially in myopic (nearsighted) patients. This helps in achieving a more accurate prescription.

4. Interpreting Results:

• Optimal Correction: When the spherical lens correction is properly adjusted, the visual acuity on both the red and green halves of the chart should be equally clear. This indicates that the correction is appropriate for both wavelengths.
• Visual Clarity: The eye typically focuses around the midpoint of the spectrum between the red and green wavelengths, so equal sharpness across both colors signifies optimal focus and minimal chromatic aberration.

5. Clinical Relevance:

• Refinement of Prescription: The duochrome test is useful for fine-tuning prescriptions by ensuring that the spherical correction is balanced and that the patient's vision is optimized for both longer and shorter wavelengths.
